The Jane Goodall Cherrywood Challenge

The annual art quilt contest by
Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics
Jane Goodall was world-renowned for her groundbreaking, long-term study of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania. Her life’s work has solidified her reputation as a leading primatologist, conservationist, and influential voice for animal welfare.
Her passing is widely mourned as the loss of an iconic voice. This challenge memorializes Jane and her inspirational message of peace and hope.
A portion of the proceeds from this Cherrywood Challenge will be donated to JaneGoodall.org. This is also a great resource for inspiration!

THEME
From the day she began her legendary chimpanzee research in Gombe, Jane Goodall took an unorthodox approach to her subjects. As a UN Messenger of Peace and a dedicated activist, Jane spent her later years campaigning for endangered species and environmental protection.
We challenge you to choose an aspect of Jane’s complex life as the theme for your original work.
We will select 225 quilts based on originality, creativity, design, visual impact, workmanship, use of fabric and overall variety of the exhibit.
SIZE
20" x 20"
COLOR
Your entry is
limited to eight colors of fabric
with one exception:
ONYX (Cherrywood black) MAY BE ADDED.
• It is not necessary to use all eight colors.
• You may order more of any of the eight colors.
• If you use paint/ink/pencil in your piece, challenge yourself to keep it in the same general color family. Thread may be any color (see our Aurifil 28wt thread collection!).
FABRIC
The entire quilt top and binding must be made out of the Cherrywood Challenge Bundle (with the option to add Onyx).
• No other brand of fabric may be used on the front, including binding.
• However, you may use any fabric brand on the back.
• This challenge is about using your talents to show off the suede texture and color of Cherrywood.
TECHNIQUES
Any technique is allowed: hand or machine-quilting, thread painting, embroidery, couching, beading, manipulating, drawing, etc!
• If you use paint/ink, it should not totally camouflage the fabric. We must be able to recognize the Cherrywood fabrics.
• Must maintain character of a textile quilt and consist of a top, a middle batting, and a backing held together with stitching.
ENTRY FEE
$35.00
• We collect your contact information, Artist Statement and fee at the time of submission.
EMBELLISHMENTS
Embellishments must stay within the 20-inch quilt dimensions.
Must withstand packing, shipping and handling many times.
Items allowed: beads, ribbon, buttons, charms, etc.
Tulle is allowed as long as it does not drastically change the color of the fabric.
NO glitter allowed (comes off and damages other quilts)
NO dangling materials (could get caught and tear)
• PLEASE DO NOT USE AI (Artificial Intelligence) to design your quilt.
• ONE ENTRY per person.
• Visible binding must be Cherrywood Fabric. Facing the quilt is acceptable. Backing fabric does NOT have to be Cherrywood.
• Please DO NOT add a hanging sleeve. It is not necessary in this case, and actually causes problems in our display system.
• Maximum thickness: 1 inch. Three-dimensional quilts that may be crushed or damaged during travel may be disqualified.
• BE AWARE: Quilts that use heat-activated marking pens may be disqualified because the marks re-appear during shipping in cold climates. This has happened in the past. It is cold in Minnesota in February!
